Forklift Tank Safety

The propane powered lift truck is one of the most common kinds of lift trucks. These vehicle are powered by propane, which come with certain considerations that should be accounted for. It is extremely important that PPE or also referred to as Personal Protective Equipment is worn at all times so as to be safe.



PPE

Propane gas is really cold. So cold in fact that exposure to your skin can cause severe burns to happen. When you are exchanging the propane tank or re-fueling, be sure to wear thick gloves and a full face shield or goggles. PPE or Personal Protective Equipment is a requirement to be used on site so as to keep the driver as safe as possible. Personal Protective Equipment or PPE is a standard workplace requirement for most companies using this equipment and if the driver does not have the correct items on, like for instance a hardhat, safety goggles, steel-toe boots etc. than he or she will be prohibited from utilizing the machine.



Check the Valve

If you are in the process of exchanging the tank, be certain that the valve on the new tank is absolutely turned off before connecting the fuel line. This is really important because when you are inserting the fuel line into an open valve, you will release the propane gas. This situation could lead to a potentially hazardous condition.



Fire Extinguisher

Having a fire extinguisher on hand during the time the tank is being changed out or when re-fueling is occurring is one more important safety procedure to have implemented. Secure the Tank

Most propane tanks are strapped securely into place by some kind of strap or restraining device. Be certain that this device is properly working and used properly so that you can prevent the tank from falling or shifting, since this can also lead to a dangerous condition.
