Forklift Basics

A forklift is an all-around equipment. It is a small vehicle which has attachments on the front which allow it to lift and move a variety of loads. Forklifts are common features in factories and warehouses. A forklift operator should acquire special training, specially because these types of machinery function on rear-wheel drive and this can be really hard to get used to until one is familiar with it. Since the forklift carries its load at the front, the center of gravity is continually shifting and this results in the machine being frequently unstable.

Parts

Normally, a forklift operator generally sits in an area known as the "cat." This area provides metal protection which stretches overhead similar to a roof. On the front of the machine, the mast is located. The mast is the mechanism that raises and lowers the load using hydraulic cylinders.

Forklift Components

When searching for information about forklift parts and aftermarket forklift parts, it is a great idea to check out the World Wide Web or your local phone directory. A lot of places provide various forklift parts, forklift accessories and support products.

Structural Parts

The top part of a lift truck is referred to as the overhead guard. The foot guard is the part that separates the load from the cabin. A counterweight is situated at the forklift's back and is installed there that allows you to keep the machine from falling over.

The blades and Apron

Usually, the load apron is responsible for keeping the cargo in place while the metal arms, or forks, cradle the load. The blades can be tilted in an effort to balance the load. This is done utilizing the hydraulic hoist arm and the tilting ram which powers the upward fork movement.

The Lift Structure

The guard of the load apron extends well above the apron. It works to keep the load balanced when the forks carry it along the track of the arms of the upright.

Mechanics

The forklifts internal combustion engine allows the power to be sent to the machinery wheels, providing the forklift with movement. The wheels have brakes installed so as to enable the operator the chance to stop or slow down the machinery as needed.

Controls

Lifting loads is operated using hoist controls which are located in the cat. The forklift is driven by utilizing the steering wheel to turn, similar to a truck or car.

Load Rating Plate

This plate is situated in the cabin. This load rating plate details the weight restrictions for each specific type of forklift.
