Getting Aboard the Forklift
One of the keys to maintaining operator safety is the 3-point dismount. Even if this is often overlooked, it is a major problem in keeping operator's safe. For example, several years ago, at a lift truck rally, a participator carried out the course perfectly at a forklift rally. At the end of his run, he was so thrilled, that he jumped off of his machine and forgot to make a 3-point dismount. The judges ended up docking marks from his overall score and he failed to win the competition.
The importance of dismounting and mounting forklifts is a very serious thing to be covered in training. Moreover, having drivers wear their seatbelts can really save their lives in case of a tip-over. It is essential to know that if a loaded lift truck's center of gravity moves outside of the stability triangle then a tip-over situation can occur. Trained operators rarely ever run into a tip-over situation, however, it is extremely important that they are ready for that possibility in case it happens.
Dismount/Mount
The importance of properly dismounting and mounting any type of forklift, including even a low platform pallet jack is vital to ensuring the operator stays safe. Far too many injuries result when complacency happens around these machinery. Several of the serious situations consist of: Operator's catching their coveralls or loose clothing while dismounting and could end up falling and wrenching their back. Sometimes, the driver could sprain or break an ankle when they step off of a lift truck. The operator could break an arm accidentally when falling and slipping off of the pallet jack. The operator can suffer from torn shoulder muscles if they slip on floor debris when they are still hanging onto the handhold with one hand.
In order to keep you safe, having 3 points of contact is essential. Obtaining 3 points can be done with 2 hands and 1 foot or by 2 feet and 1 hand. This stance is precisely like climbing up or down a ladder. Don't forget to face the equipment at all times. Operators often tend to jump or hop off the equipment or to face away from the equipment and these mistakes really lessen the overall possibility being hurt.
